One With Ecuador
Saturday, April 16th, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck off Ecuador’s central coast. Reports estimate that tens of thousands of people have been affected and at least 570 people have died. Though the threat of a tsunami has passed, aftershocks are expected and will likely cause the situation to worsen.
Mercy Corps is a global humanitarian organization working in over 40 countries around the world with over 30 years of expertise in emergency response and community resilience. They have mobilized a team of emergency responders to Ecuador to conduct a needs assessment in the areas affected by the earthquake. Their dedicated team is active in the region and they have emergency responders around the globe who are prepared to redeploy as the situation demands. Cotopaxi has contributed to Mercy Corps' disaster response efforts in Ecuador and will continue to keep a pulse on the situation as it evolves.
