Corporate Advocacy At Cotopaxi

Annie Agle | April 14, 2025

At Cotopaxi, we believe businesses can and should be a force for good. That’s why since 2014 we’ve donated at least 1% of our revenue to fight poverty, and it’s why we work so hard to make sustainably designed products. Our commitment to values-based leadership extends beyond charitable giving and sustainability. We actively engage in corporate advocacy to promote change that benefits people and the planet. From fashion industry reform to international labor rights and environmental conservation, we’re using our influence to make a difference, because treating people right and using natural resources well makes good business sense.

Here are some of the ongoing efforts we’ve been involved with:

Defending Public Lands And Ecosystems

Protecting the planet means taking action at every level—including local and state efforts. We are active members of the Outdoor Industry Association and are currently joining calls in Utah and beyond to protect recent threats to public lands and National Park employees. In Illinois, alongside fellow B Corp, Tony’s Chocolonely, we’re working with state leaders to safeguard forests and vital ecosystems throughout the Midwest. These natural landscapes are critical not only for biodiversity but also for mitigating climate change, supporting clean water sources, and preserving outdoor spaces for future generations.

Advocating For International Aid And Disease Prevention

Humanitarian aid has long been a cornerstone of Cotopaxi’s ultimate mission of fighting poverty and economic equality. We’ve taken our advocacy to Washington, D.C., where our employees—selected through a competitive application process—have participated in efforts to preserve international aid funding, particularly for the prevention of diseases such as malaria.

Protecting Migrant Workers In Taiwan

As part of our commitment to fair labor, Cotopaxi has joined forces with other brands and the American Apparel and Footwear Association to address the predatory recruitment of migrant workers in Taiwan. Through collective advocacy efforts, we’re urging the Taiwanese government to implement stronger protections against exploitative labor practices.

Protecting Workers From Climate Disasters

As climate change intensifies, so does the risk of extreme weather events that threaten workers' health and safety. Cotopaxi collaborated with the American Apparel and Footwear Association to draft the first-ever set of guidelines designed to help suppliers and brands protect workers from extreme heat waves and other climate disasters.

Championing The Fashion Act In New York And California

For years, we’ve been actively promoting the Fashion Sustainability and Social Accountability Act—commonly known as the Fashion Act—in New York and California. This groundbreaking legislation would require major fashion brands to disclose their environmental and social impacts, set clear science-based targets for emissions reduction, and improve supply chain transparency. By holding companies accountable for their impact, the Fashion Act represents a critical step toward a more ethical and sustainable industry.

Holding The Fashion Industry Accountable

We’ve joined calls in Washington and Oregon to support the passage of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) laws. These policies would require fashion and apparel companies to manage the full lifecycle of their products, ensuring more responsible waste disposal, recycling programs, and reduced environmental harm. By pushing for EPR legislation, we’re working to shift the industry toward a circular economy that prioritizes sustainability over excess.

Advocacy As A Core Business Value

At Cotopaxi, corporate advocacy isn’t an afterthought—it’s embedded in our DNA. Real change requires more than good intentions; it demands action, collaboration, and a willingness to challenge the status quo. Whether we’re pushing for stronger labor protections, promoting climate legislation, or advocating for global health initiatives, we are committed to using our influence to drive meaningful change.

We invite our customers, partners, and fellow brands to join us in these efforts. Together, we can build a future where businesses lead with integrity, sustainability, and a deep commitment to the well-being of people and the planet.
